Budleigh Salterton, Devon

Castle Lane

This extension and refurbishment of an unloved Arts and Crafts house in Budleigh Salterton was carefully designed to respect the existing building whilst creating a contemporary addition.

The original house had been unoccupied for a number of years and the site was largely overgrown. The existing house was run down and in need of updating throughout. Although the house benefits from fantastic views over Budleigh Salterton and the coastline beyond the original house took little benefit of these. Leaded light windows and dark corridors gave the house an oppressive feel.

The clients wanted to create a light filled home making the most of the views and with strong connections to the garden. A large open plan living/dining/kitchen space was an essential part of the brief and along with some significant internal alterations this tired house has been transformed into a beautiful home.
