Duryard Farm
The brief for this project was to create a new studio for the client to carry out their hobby creating textile artwork. Natural light and plenty of storage were essential considerations as well as the creation of a separate ‘tidy area’ for planning projects, drawing and computer based work. The clients also wanted the new studio to have a strong connection with the existing farmhouse whilst providing a contemporary feel to the site.
Designed as one large volume with a vaulted ceiling, a bathroom pod in the centre of the space is used to define specific areas with a large workshop to one end and the ‘tidy area’ doubling as a kitchen at the other end. A combination of brick and timber finishes allow the extension to relate to the farmhouse whilst introducing a more contemporary edge. High levels of insulation and airtightness create an energy efficient building envelope with minimal heating demands.
